What’s Culturlingua like?

We pride ourselves on our small size and our friendly, community atmosphere. We have many Mexicans studying English- this is a perfect chance to interchange with them… the opportunity is ideal to re-enforce what you have learned in the classroom, and to discover true Mexico, as the Mexicans find it!

Situated in a 120 year old, very typical Spanish colonial style house, with a garden, courtyard and high ceilings, your surroundings will only add to our learning experience!

Where is the school?

Culturlingua is just two blocks from the center of Tlaquepaque and ‘The Parien’. The 647 bus stops at the street corner taking you into the very heart of Guadalajara in 20 minutes and the airport is 25 minutes away by taxi (150 pesos). Should you wish to take a taxi into the city centre, you will pay no more than 70 pesos. The bustling city bus station is easily accessible from the school too, just 10 minutes by bus, or 5 minutes by taxi, you are able to go to literally hundreds of different destinations throughout Mexico. For example, Guanajuato, San Luis Potosi, Morelia (beautiful colonial cities), Puerto Vallarta (Pacific beach resort), Manzanillo and Patzcuaro (towns in the mountains) and even Mexico city (7 hours by bus, 440 pesos).

What’s Tlaquepaque like?

Tlaquepaque is 7kms southeast of downtown Guadalajara. As Guadalajara has grown, what was once the self-contained town of Tlaquepaque has become a suburb of Guadalajara. BUT it has successfully retained its small town atmosphere and feeling. It was the first stop on the long road to Mexico City in colonial times and some great colonial houses can be seen here. Mariachis regularly play in the Parien, handicrafts shops, boutiques and little restaurants are plentiful. More recently, the town has capitalized on its creative talents by rejuvenating the central Jardin Hidalgo. Flowers, small benches, monuments and a bandstand grace the plaza and allow the visitor to relax and absorb everyday life in this bustling Mexican community.

What’s Guadalajara like?

Guadalajara is Mexico’s second city. Although at times it is eclipsed by the sheer size of México City, one should not forget that the Guadalajara conurbation is home to an estimated 5 million people. Its contribution to Mexico is significant, as it is the state capital of Jalisco and the home of mariachi music, tequila and the famous Mexican sombrero hat!

Guadalajara has plenty of museums, historic buildings, churches and cathedrals, galleries, shopping centers, theaters, parks, culture and festivals for you visit.

In addition, the suburbs of Zapopan and Tonala, near to Tlaquepaque, deserve exploring for their own unique characters and qualities.

What’s México like?

Take 2 million square kilometers of land, cut the tropic of Cancer through it, add several other geographical features; desert, mountains, jungle, great plateaus, rich mineral deposits and of course the Gulf of Mexico and Pacific coasts.

Mix this with 97.5 million people and you will start… just start to have an idea of what Mexico is like!

This country is just so rich with diverse experiences- both good and bad that its impossible to clearly describe the country, and do it justice.

Maybe the best way to describe Mexico is to say it is a country of extremes, with a good climate and great people- come here and find out for yourself!

You are welcome to pay in US dollars or Mexican pesos on the first day you have classes. There are many banks and ATM machines just two blocks from the school should you wish to withdraw cash or change travellers cheques while you are here in México.

What other activities are there for me to do?

Your classes will take up your mornings, therefore, after lunch with your host family your afternoons are yours to do what you like.

In order to accelerate your learning, activities or volunteering can immerse you further in Spanish and help you to increase your learning and understanding of the language.

That’s the scientific explanation. We suggest you do more activities to have fun… and learn more Spanish too!

All such activities are entirely voluntary- some are free, some have a charge. You can decide to do as much or as little as you like;

  • Take painting classes
  • Take Mexican cookery classes
  • Visit a handicrafts factory
  • Visit Tlaquepaques Refugio
  • Volunteer at a local church / school or other places
  • Spend time with our English students (Our Mexicans learning English!)

What if I don’t like the classes?

Or, even worse, I just don’t understand the classes? (It’s been a very long time since I studied!) We understand that every student has a different reason and motivation for learning Spanish. That is the advantage of offering private classes. Your teacher will be able to asses your needs. Individually. Whether you can learn quickly, or you need more time, you need lots of oral practice, conversation or written exercises to help you learn… our teachers can help you! It’s their job! Culturlinguas objective is that you learn Spanish and that you are happy and confident learning Spanish. Step by step we will help you to achieve your objective of learning Spanish.

How much will it REALLY cost me to come and study?

Well, taking an average two weeks stay:

  • CLASSES - $350
  • ACCOMMODATION (food & room) – $290
  • ACTIVITIES - $50
  • TAXI (airport there and return) - $30
  • SPENDING MONEY - $150
  • TOTAL $870

Clearly the cost depends on you, how much money you spend and the things you would like to do while you are here. Your stay could be cheaper, or more expensive depending on these variables.

Do I need to buy a text book?

We don’t use specific text books. As each person is taught privately, our teachers design a specific plan of studies appropriate to you, but using the guidelines set out on the ‘programs’ page. However, we do offer for sale a Spanish Grammar in Use book. This book offers students explanations and examples of Grammar, and then has practice activities to complete, with an answer key. This book is great for class, but ideal for further study too.
